Fibromyalgia can be a very debilitating condition. It is characterized by extreme fatigue and sleep disorders, cognitive difficulties and headaches, but especially for the pain of fibromyalgia that affects soft tissues rather than the joints. Often there are multiple trigger points that are sensitive to touch.

The cause of fibromyalgia is unclear. There may be an underlying genetic susceptibility, and may have infections that can trigger pain of fibromyalgia. But usually doctors can not locate a specific cause. Twenty years ago meant that rule out fibromyalgia pain as “psychosomatic”. Fortunately, this is no longer the case in most cases.

I had generalized muscle and joint pain and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. My feet were cramping so bad at night that I was unable to walk. My hands burned and hurt and could not make a fist or extend my fingers without extreme pain. My elbows were so painful she could not even rely on a foam pillow. I felt very bad.

My doctor says that women with fibromyalgia do not produce enough vitamin D, no matter how much sun they receive. I live in Florida and get a lot of sun!

how much vitamin D is needed?

I was prescribed 50,000 units once a week with 3,000 IU a day thereafter. My level of vitamin D remains low dose and up to 5,000 IU.

Now I take 7,000 IU of vitamin D a day. The addition of vitamin D to my daily multivitamins has been a lifesaver. Many of the symptoms of fibro left and others have been mitigated.

I advise women with symptoms of fibromyalgia that their vitamin D levels checked. It is a simple test that changed my life.

A. The question of whether vitamin D supplements can ease the pain of fibromyalgia is a bit controversial. A small randomized controlled trial ( Pain February 2014 ) found a significant benefit.

Keep 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the sweet spot:

A review by the advocacy group Vitamin D Council suggests that people with fibromyalgia should try to maintain its level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, measured with the simple blood test you mentioned a to above 40 nanograms / milliliter . If your doctor does not have or will not measure 25-hydroxyvitamin D for you, the Council of vitamin D it has been associated with ZRT labs to provide home DIY test for a relatively reasonable price.

itamin D Reduces Fibromyalgia Symptoms

There is no cure for fibromyalgia in Western medicine.  Western medicine treats fibromyalgia’s various symptoms with a variety of medications. Fibromyalgia is likely the second most common inflammatory disease of the joints and muscles behind osteoarthritis.

Fibromyalgia is also accompanied by fatigue, sleeplessness, mood swings, and memory loss.[1] The medical industry once considered the condition to be in people’s mind but now evidence supports the condition is actually in the body.

Fibromyalgia has been linked to deficiency of the vitamin D hormone, but one time the Western medical industry only recognized vitamin D as being involved in bone health.

Science has now determined there are vitamin D receptors in nearly all the cells in the body, and vitamin D is involved in far more functions than previously thought.

Fibromyalgia and Vitamin D Deficiency

Some studies showed an association with fibromyalgia and vitamin D deficiency. This lead to the development of various clinical trials to test if increasing vitamin D levels lessened fibromyalgia symptoms.

Results varied but in the end researchers determined that increasing vitamin D levels did reduce fibromyalgia symptoms, but the reduction in symptoms was dose dependent.

Raising vitamin D blood levels to to 30 didn’t have much of and effect on fibromyalgia pain and other symptoms. Raising vitamin D blood levels to 50 did have a significant effect on reducing fibromyalgia pain and symptoms.

Unfortunately Western medical institutions have set a vitamin blood level of 30 as being acceptable. Fortunately some researchers are now recommending 50 for the minimum level.

It is best to have your body produce its own vitamin D by getting adequate sun exposure daily. And remember darker skinned people need more sun exposure.
